20 year retiree of LE in NPS. There are lots of missing people in parks, lots of suspicious deaths. Many of those cases in a lot of parks are under the jurisdiction of the counties. Many parks are proprietary jurisdiction, and therefore missing people and murders are investigated by the sheriffs and counties. The park still has a case file on it though as they do SAR response and initial searches. All the fatalities in one of the parks I worked were handled by the county. We still did a report on it though. Also to tell the truth, the superintendents have too much control over LE they want to hide anything negative. Many of the superintendents are corrupt and are part of the criminal syndicate of our government. Many of the special agents were lazy and would pass cases off to other agencies or dump them on the ranger staff who never had time for investigations. The NPS LE needs to be completely revamped and taken out from the tentacles of the sleazy superintendents.
One of the things AJ is incredibly good at, is matching his guest's energy level. Makes for such a good, easy to listen to show. As a Radio guy, let me say he's one of the best of us.

When Dave talked about the "hitchhiker effect" it reminded me of a similar experience I had when I was about 16 years old. I grew up in the western half of Washington State and would often go on hikes alone in the forests near my home. One day, I was deep in the woods and started to have that creepy feeling you get when you know you are being watched. Then, I started to hear and see a large shape moving through the trees, parallel to my path. I immediately turned around and headed back towards my house. Once I started to leave, the activity in the woods stopped. Along the way, I had to cross a muddy area. The mud had been fresh and unmarred when I first came though earlier in the day, making mine the only footprints on the trail. Now, when I returned, just off to the side of where I had stepped, was a single, massive, bare, human-like footprint about 15-16 inches long. I never went back to that particular section of the forest. If the intent was to scare me away from the area, it definitely worked!
40:48 stumbling upon that factoid of using the missing people in the Park service to extricate people from society to a different part of a governmental plant would make total sense of why they wouldn't give him the lists of the missing people from the park service through the FOIA requests ...
Never separate from hiking group without a buddy. Buddy system keeps you safe!
