Description

Watch the Joseph Matheny podcast NOW by joining The Why Files Patreon!: https://www.patreon.com/thewhyfiles Joseph Matheny invented something in 1989 that nobody had a name for yet. He called it a story. The internet called it the first alternate reality game. The Navy called him to ask how he did it. He turned them down. Tonight he's in the basement explaining how he built an early AI, game-mastered Robert Anton Wilson at Esalen, and why QAnon looks so familiar to him. Some things are better understood when you know how the trick works.

Sometimes conspiracy theories are psyops, to discredit legit conspiracies. This is a technique used by spooks and spies going back before the modern era. Winston Churchill summed it up best ... "In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies"

I don't have a clue what this is about but it sure sounds interesting.

Yeah it was crazy when that guy showed up at Comet Ping Pong and somehow knew to shoot into a closet through a door destroying the electronics containing the surveillance footage and nothing else, and nobody else was hurt. Yeah, that WAS weird.

Not everyone has had that thing where they think of someone they haven't talked to in a while and then suddenly the phone rings and it's them.

The Basement has to be the coolest, most esoteric collection of interviews on the internet. I’m into weird podcasts and I’ve learned so many things and learned about so many incredible people on this show. Thank you 🙏🏻 (Still love regular WF, too! 🧡(

I was half-listening until he said "Esalen." If you're unfamiliar with it, give it a search. It shows how cults can insinuate themselves into 'science.'

Your ground floor self (and Hecklefish) would say to you "There's always a book".
