Joaquin Phoenix, who voiced Kenai, lost his brother River in real life. According to the director, when they were recording Kenai's reaction to Sitka's death, Phoenix's performance was so raw and intense that much of it had to be cut for fear that it would upset kids too much.
Disney just needs to go back to these type of stories with this type of animation
I always thought Brother Bear was such an underrated movie that nobody really talks about, call me crazy but I'd put it up there with a classic like Lion King for how sweet and emotional it is
Cool little detail you might miss: When he's a human, the movie is shown in letterbox, but when he wakes up as a bear, it transitions into wide-screen, the animals look less threatening, and the colors become more vibrant, to represent Kenai's perspective changing.
Fun Facts: 1. When Kenai was human we didn't understand what the bear was saying, we only heard a growling and roaring...But when Kenai was the bear and we understood what the other bears were saying, it was Denahi who was growling and roaring instead of talking (except for the short "No!" by the river)—just like a wild animal... 2. From the second Kenai transforms into a bear there's always an eagle (ie. Sitka) in the shots watching over him on his journey. 3. There was a special feature DVD version where you could watch the whole movie with Moose commentary and it’s hilarious 😂
Sad to note: This movie was the last work of Lion King on Broadway performer Jason Raize, who played Denahi. A victim of suicide in 2004. He gave Denahi a life and a personality in this “coming of age/path to redemption” story.
Something I always appreciated about this film is that they used actual Bald Eagles cries. Most of the time they’re portrayed in pop culture, Bald Eagles are given the cries of Red Tailed Hawks.
Kenai’s soft “Your mother’s not coming” always breaks me
This movie has such a beautiful take on masculinity and the coming of age. That in order to become a man, you must follow a path guided by love instead of hatred, and the horrible consequences of choosing violence instead. This, Treasure Planet and Tarzan all have beautiful stories centered around those messages, and are all so criminally underrated.
