Description

Sam Stein and Jonathan Cohn talk with Therese Vogel about the return of measles. Therese shares the story of her sister, who contracted measles as a child and suffered permanent brain damage—shaping the rest of her life—and why that led her to join Grandparents for Vaccines. They discuss why vaccine skepticism has risen, how outbreaks are spreading again as vaccination rates fall, and why many Americans have forgotten how dangerous these diseases once were. They explore the nascent political backlash to anti-vaccine messaging—and how groups like Grandparents for Vaccines are using personal stories to reach people when facts alone aren’t enough. My first paediatric patient was an 8 year old boy. Dying with menengitis caused by measles. My three boys are all fully vaccinated. I have zero tolerance for science deniers.

Imagine putting your children’s health at risk based on the opinion of a man who snorts cocaine off toilet seats.😅

The U.S. is better about vaccinating their cattle than they are their kids.

I took care of seniors who'd had polio in childhood. They suffered for the rest of their lives. I can't imagine healthcare without vaccines.

I was one of the first children to receive the Polio vaccine. My mother was so happy when we got the note from school that we could get the vaccine in these initial trials. I had a friend who died from polio in the 3rd grade. I also had a neighbor that after getting measles lost her vision. She was 8 years old. I have always been so thankful for the advancements in science that helped keep my daughter safe. Thank you for this very important piece!

I caught the measles in 1st grade, in 1961. My sister and brother caught it from me. I still remember my sister having blood running out of her ear because of it. She became hearing impaired and now has 2 hearing aids. Measles is a very serious disease, not just an inconvenience. I don't understand how people could choose to let their children take the risk.

Grandparents are an important asset. They have the ancestral memories and experience we need now.

I had measles in 1962 and nearly lost my vision. I lay in a dark room for weeks and I remember the doctor coming in every day until I was out of danger. Please prevent needless suffering among our precious children.

I’ll be 77 yr old this summer. I had measles when I was five and almost died. My younger sister had whooping cough and she almost died. I knew kids who got polio and suffered life long disabilities because of it. Polio Vaccines were not available until the mid 1950s. I was scared to get the shot but my parents were thrilled. I also had a good friend in 1970s that contracted measles while pregnant and that ended poorly. I could go on & on. But I want to say that “Vaccines cause Adults!”
