They did find the Endurance with much the same team a few years later. I cannot believe that they have MOVIES of Shackleton's crew, scenes of the islands they reached and so forth. Their story is absolutely amazing -- they didn't lose a SINGLE MAN! That is amazing especially contending with the extreme cold, extreme physical challenges for each man. A new book is out about the Endurance, comparing their exploration with this team's first effort and then a return to complete their job of discovery. Shackelton's men underwent great mental strain too; everyone got on everyone's nerves. At one point a man who snored loudly was relegated to another shelter, alone at night. Some men bullied others, some had eccentric habits that rubbed others the wrong way, a persistent cough or something that would be brushed off in normal times. And then they had to shoot their dogs which was a HUGE grief for most of them. In that one film of the dogs pulling a sled, the dog's face is covered with snow and you can't help wondering what those poor animals went through doing that hard, demanding work in subzero temperatures for months on end. Poor babies.
The last Heroic Age of the Antartic explorations was Shackeltons trip that he went on and got stuck. It's a fascinating story. After this trip, tech started to progress, and equipment was more sophisticated. Even when Shackelton went back, his ship had a lot of tech on board . For that time at least. It was luxury for him! The men who went on these journeys to Antartica were a different breed. Strong for sure. The respect I hold for these men, and all that went before then, that allowed us to map out the area, is immense.
Modern technology is amazing. And so is mother nature. Wow
Shakleton had balls of steel to navigate a mere rowboat through the drake passage….🚣♀️ (steel I tell ya)
Anyone here watching this dicumentary from Brazil too??? Like it
It's a great documentary and definitely worth watching. I enjoyed it.
The story of Endurance is more than a tale of survival — it’s proof of the human spirit, daring to challenge nature and redefine its own limits. A true heroic age, brought back to life by modern technology and memories that never sank. ⚓❄
They took a cold boat ride on someone elses dime.
