One thing people need to understand about socialism: we can debate the merits of the one-party state version of socialism that existed in the USSR, and that persists in different forms in China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Cuba. There are both positive and negative things about those models, and U.S. aggression has often played a role in the negative things. But that is just ONE version of socialism. There have been hundreds of successful democratically elected socialist leaders all over the world, from the architects of the NHS in Britain like Aneurin Bevan, to Tommy Douglas who led the charge for universal healthcare in Canada, to Latin American leaders like Cheddi Jagan and Jose Mujica, to Michael Manley in Jamaica, to Nelson Mandela in South Africa, to the current mayors of Paris and Barcelona. Socialists have played leading roles in political parties that have governed the countries on Earth with the longest life expectancies and highest reported rates of happiness like Finland and Denmark. Socialists have led successful trade unions like the UAW, IAM, and ILGWU, they have been among the world's greatest scientists (Albert Einstein), civil rights leaders (MLK, Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin), disability rights advocates (Helen Keller), environmentalists (Barry Commoner), and anti-colonial and anti-apartheid activists (Aime Cesaire, Neville Alexander, Franz Fanon). Read Molly Crabapple's recent book on the Bund to see how central democratic socialists were to Jewish labor militancy in Eastern Europe, and to anti-fascist resistance inside the Warsaw Ghetto. Democratic socialists have been among the sharpest critics of authoritarian forms of socialism as well as capitalism, which is why they were hated by Stalin as well as Hitler, Franco, and the long list of dictators the US backed during the Cold War (and before and after). Democratic socialism's track record in both elected office and in grassroots social movements is long, extremely accomplished, and well-documented. Don't believe the corporate media propaganda.
