Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt Peru's presidential runoff is too close to call as ballots continue to be counted from Sunday's election between Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former dictator Alberto Fujimori, and leftist lawmaker Roberto Sánchez. Peruvian election officials say final results could take up to a month to confirm. Peruvian economist and public policy expert Gustavo Guerra-García Picasso says "democracy has been undermined" by Fujimori and her right-wing coalition, and that "reforms must be implemented quickly to restore a presidential system with checks and balances." We also speak with historian Greg Grandin, who situates the Peru election in a wider battle between right and left across Latin America — with the Trump administration conducting "an unprecedented program of aggression" against leftists. As a Peruvian, I’m deeply embarrassed that the daughter of dictator Alberto Fujimori (convicted and imprisoned for human rights violations) has once again reached the final stages of the presidential race. She continues to defend his legacy, while for the past decade her party has controlled Congress and placed its allies in key positions across other state institutions. She herself has also faced repeated corruption accusations. Making her president would hand her near-total control of the country’s political system

I am sure that Keko Fuyimoti is just as corrupt as her father.

Fun Fact: The Peruvian dictator (of Japanese descent) was ranked among the seven most corrupt leaders in the World. He was also the only president convicted and sentenced for human rights violations who neither paid compensation to the victims and survivors nor offered them an apology. His daughter, Keiko, is a clear example that the blood runs deep, since 2016, she has exercised substantial control over the State with her group and even now they have almost total control of the State. She left her father in prison, nearly had her own brother jailed for helping secure his release, and treated her mother very poorly even call her crazy bitch

It's always those "fighting for democracy" who are the biggest threats to it...like the democrats in US...the powers that be pick the candidates for their side, no matter who was voted for..example .Hillary instead of Bernie, Biden instead of anyone else, Kamala slipped in to replace Biden

As a foreigner living in Peru, I saw the last debate between Sanchez and Fuijimori and Sanchez was simply embarassing and horrible. He did not answer any questions directly and had no details regarding anything. He does not deserve to become president. I understand how people always want to classify others as left or right....but in Peru, this is not an easy task. Fujimori is not her father and during the debate, she gave clear direct and detailed answers...she was in a class by herself. I support (usually) left of centre governments but in Peru's situation, Fujimori is the better choice.

Popularity doesn't equal democracy. Hitler's popularity reached 90% after defeating France.

When they disparage the old dray lady as being a font of lies, they are not always talking about the new york times.
