Description

Find out more about Bitdefender’s two decades of unparalleled cybersecurity excellence: https://bitdefend.me/StarTalkTA Is math discovered or invented? Neil deGrasse Tyson & Chuck Nice explore information theory, talking to aliens with prime numbers, Mandelbrot sets, and why math is often called the "language of the universe" with Grant Sanderson, the math educator behind YouTube channel @3blue1brown Chuck asks the big question: “What the hell is math?” Grant explains that math goes beyond numbers and symbols—it's a universal system of truth rooted in axioms, like those laid out by Euclid in geometry. But is it a tool we invented, or a discovery we unearthed from the natural world? We explore both perspectives discussing how humans have shaped and been shaped by mathematical concepts over time. Learn how math connects us to the universe—literally. Could aliens understand prime numbers? Could we communicate with aliens using math? We discuss practical applications and how we benefit from the mental rigor math provides. Should math be taught as an art form? Plus, learn about Mandelbrot sets and how simple math can yield complex structures. We break down complex topics like information theory, and the central limit theorem, revealing how even the most abstract math finds its way into practical and scientific use. Learn how AI is entering the mathematical landscape, helping to solve problems that previously seemed out of reach. Tune in for a fascinating journey through the beauty, challenges, and infinite possibilities of math! As a retired career mathematician, both as a teacher and in industry, I am insanely jealous of Grant's ability to speak so eloquently in non-rehearsed conversation.

I think math is easier to learn when paired up with science. In high school, I remember taking pre-calculus and physics in the same semester. In the math class we were learning equations without context and it was really hard to grasp. In my physics class we would start with an observation and then build a mathematic equation to explain what we say. Sometimes, it turned out to be the same equation, but it was so much easier to learn in the physics class.

Grant Sanderson makes everyone around him look average intelligence wise. Not only he is an encyclopedia of mathematics, but the way he expresses his ideas is beautiful. He has such a clarity of thought. I am a huge huge fan.

Grant is possibly the best guest ever on StarTalk. I loved this.

Do you believe math is a human invention or a discovery of the universe's fundamental truths, and how might this perspective shape our understanding of alien communication?

Hello Neil DeGrasse, I was the pianist that entertained you at your Dr friends house on New Years in Albuquerque New Mexico. My bassist and I didn't know who was was so not to cause us any embarrassment you told us jokes and had us cracking up. Thankyou for that, I have been following you and your boy Chuck since then learning and laughing with you both for years now. You and Chuck are a perfect team and he has become one of my favorite intelligent Comedians. Much love and appreciation to my fellow New Yorkers. Your like a big brother from another mother.

I don't know why, but I think Grant has one of the most pleasant voices, but also a very precise wording in whatever he says, which somehow makes this a superbly comfortable watch to me.

Sophomore year in high school I asked that exact question, "Why/how do we just accept certain things - postulates - but have to prove theorems?" The other girls laughed but my teacher took the question seriously.
