Episode 2 is amazing. The idea of her “way out” from the horrible factory life being a one way ticket into the Sith is so twisted, great depiction of the fall to the dark side.
Cant get over how much I loved Episode 2. Reminded me a lot of Stephen King books, that unsettling innocence of childhood from a darker perspective just feels you with dread for the poor girl. But ultimately she’s trying to escape total poverty and get a better life
Cartoon saloon(the studio that made ep 2) are animation geniuses. They made the irish fantasy trilogy, including movies like secret of the kells, song of the sea, and the wolfwalkers. And each of these movies are more breathtaking than the last one. They are the single most underrated animation studio that has ever existed, since their movies are absolutely gorgeous but never receive appropriate box office reception, which is unbelievable because their movies get nominated for academy awards all the time. I hope this short will bring more attention to this studio.
Episode 2 was honestly my favorite episode of the season. Star Wars has rarely ever delved into horror, and when it has, it didn't stick with it. Skreecher's Reach didn't do that, though. It stuck with that horror tone. The "Skreecher" was pretty scary, too. And the addition of the lightsaber made it scarier. I was wondering at first how the episode was really a Star Wars episode, but that helped. And then having Dal's escape being with a Sith, a being of immense hate and evil, descending like an angel from the heavens was honestly really cool. It's a concept I haven't seen much in horror that I'd love to see more of. There's sci-fi horror, of course, where the horror is ALWAYS from above, but I think it would be interesting in religious context. Which is actually an idea I've had for a while now. Edit: Also, I just need to point out the music in Skreecher's Reach as well. Those vocals are so soft and innocent, yet haunting all at the same time.
Screechers Reach is one of the darkest and most sinister things I’ve ever seen from Star Wars. Absolutely incredible.
PunkRobot won the Oscar in 2016 for best animated short film for Bear Story. As a chilean, I am so proud of their achievements, and the story of this short film is about the genocide of the Selknam people in the Patagonia by colonialism and it touches every particle of me
I read the ending of episode 3 as the girls' death. Older sister is way underwater, her hand reaches out and then goes still, it fades to white. Suddenly they're above ground and everything's suspiciously perfect, and when we pan up to the sky we see that two more stars have joined their mothers'. They didn't survive the sabotage, they're in the afterlife with the rest of their people. The factory was destroyed but the empire ended up completely genociding their people.
Skreecher's Reach is the closest Star Wars has come to straight up Cosmic Horror. Living a horrible existence, entranced by voices from a corrupted item, dragging your mates along on a doomed quest, killing what you think is the threat only to be "rewarded" by your cosmic host, everyone pretending it's a good ending when everyone can feel the truth and we as the watchers know the true horrors ahead. Absoloutley great stuff
Ep. 2, was beautifully dark. I love it.
