Statins and Dementia: Surprising Link Revealed
Statins: Neuroprotection vs. Cognitive Side Effects Explained
Understand the dual impact of statins on brain health, clarifying why they appear to both reduce dementia risk while potentially causing short-term cognitive impairment due to underlying cellular mechanism changes.
Short Summary
- Meta-analyses confirm that statin use correlates with significantly reduced risks of dementia (up to 20%) and Alzheimer's disease compared to non-users.
- Cognitive impairment side effects stem from reduced cholesterol, leading to rigid cell membranes and subsequent insulin resistance.
- Statins exert powerful, indirect anti-inflammatory effects by blocking protein prenylation, which dampens major inflammatory pathways (NF-kB, TLR, MyD88).
- For patients requiring statins, CoQ10 supplementation is advised to offset reduced production from the inhibited HMG-CoA pathway.
This session dissects the complex biology: from the HMG-CoA pathway disruption to membrane function, providing context for conflicting clinical observations regarding brain health. Readers gain critical insight into the mechanical underpinnings of statin pleiotropy and practical management considerations for dosage and co-supplementation.

A friend who was fine went on statins and within 3 years was dead from Dementia. It happened so fast.
This is a deep, long-form medical discussion intended for serious learners. I’ll be adding chapter timestamps shortly for easier navigation.
🗽 My mother has dementia. We have cancelled the statins against the doctors recommendation. Despite that the total cholesterol is not high, only the LDL is higher. But we don't mind. .
I take 5mg Risuvastatin for the reduced inflammation. I will not take high dose statins. Instead lowered my trigs from 200's to <75 with low card diet which also lowers my inflammation.
Thank you for trying to disseminate accurate information and trying to combat misinformation in medicine and public health.
@36:10 wow this mechanism of insulin resistance via cholesterol deprivation is huge, no one has ever made it so clear, these tidbits r y I've stuck to hearing ur lectures for years thank u dr been🙌💪 I guess that raises the next question how low is too low to cause this, prob depends on the person I'm guessing

Thank you Dr Been. I am a pulmonary/critical care doc. I learn so much from you. The depth and clarity of your explanations are outstanding. There is no other platform even close. Please keep educating. You make a huge difference by presenting unadulterated science. 🙏🏾
Thanks for taking the time to present quality information.
I have been on statins for 20 years with absolutely no negative side effects. At 67yo, calcium score : zero, and no vessel or valve disease - thank you statins - I am the only one in my peer grew up with a zero calcium score. I recently switched to Rapatha to see if desmosterol levels return to baseline. If lp-pla2 or mpo rise, I’ll add back a 2.5mg rosuvastatin.
