Description

Einar Tangen is a Senior Fellow at Teihe Institute and a Senior Fellow at CIGI. Tangen discusses how China made its supply chains immune to economic coercions and, at the same time, has powerful economic weapons at its own disposal. China's restrictions on rare earth minerals are a powerful instrument, yet the risk of weaponing trade is that other states will diversify away from China. It can take over 100 different stages of chemical separation to refine some of these rare earth metals. It is not profitable, but it is strategic.

For the sake of peace it is good that China has implemented export controls on rare minerals to the most warlike country. A country that is always at war somewhere in the world, may in the future have a period of peace.
