Quantum Physics, Infinity, and the Crisis in Modern Scientific Explanation

Discover why leading physicist David Deutsch argues that much of modern quantum theory fails to be actual science, relying instead on unexplained "miracles," and learn how embracing the physical reality of infinity might unlock reality's true structure.

Short Summary

  • Reject explanations that rely on unexplained magic, like wave function collapse, as this abandons science's core mission of understanding reality.
  • Infinity is a physical reality that good explanations must incorporate, distinguishing between mathematically possible and physically permitted infinities.
  • Pervasive bad philosophy (positivism, postmodernism, woke theories) has stifled progress in fundamental physics, specifically hiding the explanatory power of the Many-Worlds interpretation.
  • The current cosmological view, while rich in data, is highly insecure regarding initial conditions and dark energy, signaling high potential for discovery, not final completion.

This overview introduces David Deutsch's fundamental critique of contemporary physics, contrasting theories based purely on accepting unexplained processes with genuinely explanatory frameworks. The discussion moves from the necessity of handling infinity to the philosophical traps currently hindering theoretical breakthroughs like quantum gravity and universal computation.

Description

David Deutsch just exposed something shocking about modern science. Most quantum theories aren't actually science at all. They're just miracles disguised as explanations. When you ask how quantum entanglement works, most interpretations by popular scientists basically reduce to "magic happens." That's not science, that's giving up on our understanding of reality. David Deutsch is a quantum physicist at Oxford, a pioneer in quantum computing, and one of the most important theoretical physicists alive. He argues that only the many-worlds theory actually explains what's happening in quantum experiments instead of just accepting it as a mystery never to be explained. This conversation reveals why modern physics has abandoned its core mission. Key Takeaways: 00:02:15 – David Deutsch introduces the idea that infinity is not just a mathematical abstraction but a physical reality. 00:06:42 – He emphasizes that understanding infinity is central to progress in both science and philosophy. 00:11:03 – Discussion on how infinity challenges human intuition and traditional explanations. 00:18:29 – Deutsch argues that good explanations must account for infinity, not avoid it. 00:23:51 – He contrasts finite vs. infinite models of the universe. 00:30:14 – Infinity as an unavoidable aspect of quantum mechanics and the multiverse. 00:37:40 – Practical implications: infinity changes how we view knowledge, discovery, and human progress. 00:45:22 – He warns against simplistic or “bad” explanations that ignore infinite possibilities. 00:53:09 – Closing: infinity should be embraced as part of reality, not feared or reduced. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Additional resources: Buy David Deutsch’s Book: https://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Infinity-Explanations-Transform-World/dp/0143121359 Please join my mailing list here 👉 https://briankeating.com/yt to win a meteorite 💥 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join this channel to get access to perks like monthly Office Hours: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmXH_moPhfkqCk6S3b9RWuw/join 📚 Get a copy of my books: Think Like a Nobel Prize Winner, with life changing interviews with 9 Nobel Prizewinners: https://a.co/d/03ezQFu My tell-all cosmic memoir Losing the Nobel Prize: http://amzn.to/2sa5UpA The first-ever audiobook from Galileo: Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems: Ptolemaic and Copernican https://a.co/d/iZPi9Un 📺 Watch my most popular videos:📺 Neil Turok https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt5cFLN65fI Frank Wilczek https://youtu.be/3z8RqKMQHe0?sub_confirmation=1 Eric Weinstein vs. Stephen Wolfram https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI0AZ4Y4Ip4?sub_confirmation=1 Sir Roger Penrose: https://youtu.be/AMuqyAvX7Wo Sabine Hossenfelder: https://youtu.be/g00ilS6tBvs Avi Loeb: https://youtu.be/N9lUceHsLRw Follow me to ask questions of my guests: 🏄‍♂️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating 🔔 Subscribe https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1 📝 Join my mailing list; just click here http://briankeating.com/list ✍️ Detailed Blog posts here: https://briankeating.com/blog 🎙️ Listen on audio-only platforms: https://briankeating.com/podcast #universe #podcast #briankeating #intotheimpossible #science #astronomy #cosmology #cosmicmicrowavebackground #intotheimpossible #briankeating #daviddeutsch

David Deutsch says that because the Copenhagen interpretation of QM can't explain what actually happens when the wave function collapses, it's just 'magic'. The MWI then proposes that there is a split of some sort into parallel universes, but provides no explanation for how this split actually happens - it just has a mathematical model that describes it. Why is this not 'magic'? Seems to be a case of seeing the mote in the Copenhagen eye while ignoring the plank in the MWI eye.

There is a reason why we still discuss Cantor and his definition of infinity even after more than a hundred years later, the reason is infinity is undefined.
