It's bizarre to be like "it's not an endorsement, it's a sponsorship". The entire idea of sponsorships is that you're endorsing the sponsor. Literally the only reason anyone gets sponsored for anything is because it's an endorsement of the thing that is sponsoring you. If a pro athlete is sponsored by Nike, the reason Nike wants that is because people seeing it understand that it means the athlete is saying (implicitly or explicitly) "these Nike shoes are good and I wear them when I want to compete". If everyone instead understood it as "this athlete doesn't endorse Nike shoes, maybe he even thinks they're shit, he just got paid to promote it", then the sponsorship would be meaningless.
