Description

“To talk about it only as a matter of identity actually limits our ability to engage non-Black people in the struggle, which is that no American should be OK with law enforcement being able to break somebody, especially a poor person without any resources, the way that they broke George Floyd, whatever color you are.” Thomas Chatterton Williams, staff writer at The Atlantic and author of the forthcoming book, “Summer of Our Discontent: The Age of Certainty and the Demise of Discourse,” joins Jordan Klepper to discuss his analysis of America’s fall from Obama-era optimism to the division and cynicism of the current Trump administration. He points to factors like America’s “fetishization” of race and identity and liberal missteps in response to the murder of George Floyd in 2020 as a catalyst for this paradigm shift, and describes how aspects of France’s universal approach to identity can help America achieve a more post-racial society. #DailyShow #ThomasChattertonWilliams #SummerofOurDiscontent Subscribe to The Daily Show: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwWhs_6x42TyRM4Wstoq8HA/?sub_confirmation=1 Follow The Daily Show: Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheDailyShow Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thedailyshow Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedailyshow Stream full episodes of The Daily Show on Paramount+: http://www.paramountplus.com/thedailyshow Follow Comedy Central: Twitter: https://twitter.com/ComedyCentral Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ComedyCentral Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/comedycentral About The Daily Show: Jon Stewart and The Best F**king News Team host The Daily Show, an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning program analyzing the biggest stories in news, politics, and culture through a sharp, satirical lens. I always love Jordan Klepper when he hosts. Because his intelligence is, quite frankly, so well, rounded he is it's so quick with the sarcasm and the bites back, and yet can sit down at an interview like this. And just is way smarter than me.

I was walking through Fort Greene Brooklyn when Obama won, too. People were dancing. I felt the same way.

France may have a different take on "race" but ask any French person about northAfricans, Moroccans, Algerians, Tunisians, close your eyes while they respond, and its almost like being in the US of A

Unfortunately those who don't want racial goodwill will never go away. Trump represents that in a big way.

The thing that gives me hope is that, yes we as a society seem to take two steps forward and one step backwards, but that's still +1 steps. Historically, there's often been a slide in human rights after progress is made. Jim Crow laws were enacted in the wake of the civil war. There was push back after the Civil Rights Movement. There are probably a ton of other examples, but if you look back 100 years, or even 20 years, we've made progress. Movies from the early 2000's are cringe now in their casual sexism, for example. It's slow and it's not monotonic, but it's progress. The people who feel threatened by societal progress come together and push back after we make gains, but in the end they're losing, and I believe they will continue to lose in the long term.

Just tuned in to see what sort of person is named Thomas Chatterton by his parents. I like his attitude, though as he notes "race blind" France is not free of racism, just free of measurements of racism (as some US leaders seem to think not measuring climate change will make it go away).

The disconnect stems from lack of knowledge... As it is written, my people perish for lack of knowledge
