In this interview, Legal AF’s Ray Brescia speaks with Carmen Maria Rey Caldas, an expert on immigration law and gender-based violence and former immigration judge, who was fired by the Trump Administration in its purge of over 100 such judges in 2025. Brescia and Rey Caldas discuss her path to the bench, her experiences as an immigration judge, the events that led to her termination, and the legal actions that she and several of her colleagues have taken in response to these terminations.  As someone who has represented survivors of gender-based violence and sex trafficking, Rey Caldas also provides her reactions to Attorney General Pam Bondi’s refusal to even look at the victims of Jeffrey Epstein during the February 11, 2025, hearing before the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives.
