Look, regardless of how much one can dislike the previous PM of Canada, it doesn't make sense to treat them as if they were Iran or Russia. It gives off the impression that the US treats it's allies worse than it's enemies. You can have an America First agenda, be friendly to allies and still project strenght to your enemies to keep them at bay. This tarrif war, however, can have some serious consequences if the economy goes south.

Come on, just drop the Fentanyl excuse. There's such a small amount of Fentanyl coming out of Canada it's just silly to pretend that's a valid potential reasoning for the tariffs 😂

America WANTED the NAFTA free trade deal. They knew they couldn't afford to keep production in the USA because costs were (are) too high. Land, taxes, regulations and labor all working against US production. So the best alternative was to have American companies benefit from the lower costs in Mexico and even Canada. There's a reason things are made where they are. Many reasons actually. Unwinding it all just brings you back to the point where you realize you need a NAFTA.

About 10 to 12% of autos made in North America are made in Canada (depends on year and retooling schedules at the auto plants). Canada also buys around the 10 to 12% of North American made cars. We also maintain the same restrictions on Chinese and other countries as the USA does to help keep most manufacturing in North America. When the Auto plants in Canada start to close Canada will lift all restrictions on Chinese and other Asian manufactures. Basically the capacity the US thinks it will gain from from having new plants move from Canada will be taken by the Chinese in Canada. I believe as the plants close Canada will mirror US tariffs on Auto from the States making them even more expensive and unsaleable in Canada. What this means is with the next year or so President Trump will hand over 10 to 12% of North American auto sales (including Ford GM and Crysler) to the Chinese and other Asian car makers.
