Government Shutdown Spurs Cuts to SNAP Benefits Affecting Millions of Veterans and Workers

Understand the immediate financial devastation facing 42 million Americans due to halted SNAP benefits and learn how federal unions are challenging aggressive administrative cuts to worker protections during the ongoing government shutdown.

Short Summary

  • The refusal to fund essential programs jeopardizes food aid for over 1 million veterans and 42 million Americans, intensifying financial distress.
  • Key federal employees, including essential TSA and VA staff (many of whom are veterans), struggle to work without paychecks, risking public services.
  • The AFGE reports that the Trump administration is actively trying to illegally furlough union members and dismantle key collective bargaining rights, especially at the VA.
  • The host forcefully criticizes the current Republican Congress for inaction, labeling them the "Doormat Republican Congress" for permitting these executive overreaches.
  • This interview provides crucial context on the on-the-ground reality of the shutdown and the union's multi-front legal defense strategy.

This program addresses the severe socioeconomic fallout from the current government shutdown, focusing heavily on the suspension of SNAP benefits leading up to Veterans Day. Host Fred Wellman interviews Everett Kelley, President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), who details the crisis facing federal workers, the reliance of veterans on these safety nets, and recent hostile administrative actions against organized labor within federal agencies.

Description

Donald Trump continues to fight paying SNAP benefits as the shutdown continues. Not only are average Americans in the crosshairs but as we go into Veterans Day weekend over 1 million veterans are going without food aid and millions of government employees are unpaid or being illegally fired. This is what the Republican Doormat Congress has allowed. Fred Wellman sits down with American Federation of Government Employees President Everett Kelley to discuss it all and how they are fighting back. Everett Kelley is the national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which is the largest union representing federal and D.C. government employees. He began his first term of service as national president in February 2020, was elected to another term during the 42nd National Convention in June 2022, and was reelected during the 43rd National Convention in August 2024. Everett Kelley has been a member of AFGE since 1981. He worked at Anniston Army Depot and retired from there after 30 years of service. Thank you for covering this critical need for food assistance. Trump's administration is sadistic and full of greed.

I emailed my gop rep and told him since he was on an extended vacation and has turned most of his responsibilities over to the old orange guy he should resign. Isn't collecting money from government and not working for it what the gop accuse people of? I don't see any diference. He is even getting paid during the shutdown. I bet if we cut off their pay, they would start the government back up.

Im 70 years old, and I only get 75.00 a month . We all know that you cant buy much food with that .It's a supplement that helps seniors ,veterans and children ,families. The minimum wage hasn't been adjusted for over 20 years , so it a no brainer that so many people are struggling. Housing alone has tripled, and same with gas ,utilities and groceries

There are mothers in Africa scolding their children to finish their plates saying "There are children starving in America who have no food tonight!"

November 11th should be the day for all Veterans to organize rallies. The majority of Americans would be behind them supporting them every step of the way across America. It boggles my mind why there are not more organized rallies, especially on this day to honor all those that fought and are still fighting for our freedoms.

The richest country in the world can feed prisoners 3 meals a day; but will let children go hungry.
