This week, I’m in Longwood, Florida getting my hands dirty with a man named Rusty Durham, founder of Rusty’s Bicycle Recycle—a humble nonprofit that is quietly changing lives, one bike at a time. With the help of a few dozen volunteers—teachers, firefighters, retirees, even a guy who used to host a TV show—Rusty takes in thousands of bikes every year, fixes them up, and gives them away to folks who need them most: veterans, foster kids, the homeless, and low-income families. Each one leaves with a ride, a lock, and working lights. More importantly, they leave with dignity and a shot at getting where they need to go.
