Did Sonar Just Find Atlantis Off the Coast of Spain?

George Howard visited Michael Donnellan in Andalucia and came away with something he did not expect to find: published, peer-reviewed evidence in the marine geology literature that a major tsunami struck the Gulf of Cadiz at the same time Plato described the destruction of Atlantis. The field trip started with a road cut. Michael took George to a section of hillside excavated for a coastal road just behind the beach, where the exposed sediment face shows a deposit that is not striated, not layered in the way material accumulates gradually over time, but chaotic, mixed, full of broken shell fragments and material with the same chemical composition as the Rio Tinto river, which lies hundreds of kilometres away. Geologists who have analysed the deposit interpret it as material transported by a massive wave event, swept inland far enough to reach the Rio Tinto, then rebounding back down toward the coast. Across the street from that same cut, Michael showed George man-made placed stones embedded in the same ancient material. If the deposit is 10,000 to 12,000 years old, the stones inside it are at least that old. George then found a 2016 paper in Marine Geology by a Japanese team led by Yoshihiro Takashimizu, studying deep sea sediment cores from multiple locations in the Gulf of Cadiz, directly offshore from where Michael's scans have found what appears to be a circular destroyed city at 60 metres depth. Inside the normally uniform deep-water muds, at a site called U1390, the team found a distinctly anomalous sand layer 12 to 17 centimetres thick, 100 miles offshore, containing shell fragments, biogenic material, and an erosional lower boundary consistent with a massive wave sweeping material off the shore and out into deep water. The authors broadly dated the layer to the Younger Dryas. They were not trying to prove Atlantis. But the date, the location, and the physical signature are exactly what you would expect to find if a catastrophic wave destroyed a settlement on that coastline 13,000 years ago. George's read is direct: he has reviewed Michael Donnellan's scans in detail and considers them the best quality marine survey he has seen for a project of this kind. The Japanese paper was not looking for Atlantis and found tsunami evidence anyway. Put the two together and the relational case for a civilisation destroyed by a wave in the Gulf of Cadiz at the time Plato described becomes considerably harder to dismiss.
