The Search for Aliens with SETI Co-Founder, Jill Tarter
The Stakes and Scope of Searching for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
Discover why radio waves remain the primary tool for SETI, what AI means for future detection, and how success in this search hints at humanity's long-term survival.
Short Summary
- The search volume analyzed is minuscule compared to the cosmos, resembling dipping one glass into the entire ocean for fish.
- Radio waves are favored because longer wavelengths penetrate cosmic dust better than optical or infrared light.
- Success in finding established civilizations implies that overcoming technological infancy and avoiding self-destruction is possible.
- The conversation explores detection bias (looking for technology) and the profound ethical questions surrounding first contact.
This discussion with SETI founder Jill Tarter anchors speculative fears about alien life by detailing the rigorous, technology-based search methods currently deployed. Understanding the limitations and profound potential rewards clarifies humanity’s place in the galactic context.

The reason that aliens have never visited us is because our solar system has received terrible reviews. We only have one star. ⭐
My late husband and I had a dedicated PC that ran 24/7 for SETI to process data.
Frank Drake’s book “Is anyone out there” is well worth a read.
If we one day discover intelligent life beyond Earth, what do you think will matter more—how we respond, or how they perceive us?
I loved the "dipping a glass in the ocean" analogy. Too often we forget how small we are.
I could listen to Jill talk for hours. Very insightful and passionate.
This is such a good episode. I absolutely enjoy elders who share knowledge. A guy can tell well a person is a deep thinker, when they speak slowly, and some times many mmms, as they think through what they are saying. Its a sign of a sharp mind. Because sensationalism is so prevalent nowadays that people who speak slowly are such a treat to learn from. Bravo. The example that is shocking, is Neil and Matt are shifting their eyes up and left and right as she talks, which indicates that they are also deeply thinking about the conversation. And its a very special treat that Jill is able to bring out these qualities in these gentlemen that allows them to form a thoughtful rebuttal.
Jill, I'm 70 and Contact is my favorite movie. My one wish is to see life discovered beyond Earth. May we live to see the day❤
Can't believe this was just five days ago! Such inspirational personalities.
Jill, I love the way you give thought to the words you select to make a point. So clear and also gives us time to follow and understand your thought process. Thank you.
