I was reading a LOT of comments online from Europeans saying things like, "I hate to admit this, but the Americans actually looked legit."

so many of us dont care about the World Cup but if we win it all the world wont hear the end of it

I’m English and some factors you might not realise is 1: This match was shown live in the UK at 2am in the morning and finished at 4am. I stayed up to watch it but very few Europeans will have seen the match live, so they are making judgements solely based on the scoreline. I’ve been plenty of USA over the decades and it’s the 1st time you’ve looked a serious top level team, you even played with some Brazillian style swagger, beautiful football is not what you associate with the US, even the atmosphere inside the stadium was great, so it was a bit of a shock to see. 2: Hardly any Europeans know anything about Paraguay, we just assume they are a poor team. Agree they are very average but have a great defence, no team puts 4 goals past Paraguay, so it was impressive however most Europeans will make the mistake thinking it’s no big deal because Paraguay are really weak 3: We’ve seen in previous world cups the task is to peak at the right time. You often find that the finalists have a slow start whereas teams that look really impressive early on tend to lose early in the knockouts. 4: Experience shows to never judge any team on 1 performance. It’s really difficult/ virtually impossible to play your best where your team look good every match. The trick is to win matches even when you have an off day. Quite often defence is very important and I don’t think your defence will be good enough. Opposition managers will study the Paraguay game and come up with tactics designed to address your teams strengths. Conclusion: I think the best the USA can hope for is quarter-finals, being honest there are probably 6 other countries that can play that level, so luck will play a big part however think the key is how you lose. If you play a top 6 team and you’re matching them all game but lose on penalties, the US go out of the competition with your heads held high gaining massive respect around the world knowing the USA have finally arrived and can genuinely claim to be one of the better teams in world football.
