The take away... The US needs to invest in it's people, and not in our corporation. It's not America first, It's people first.
I have a wealthy friend complaining about taxes. Someone who recently was Baptized. They said something that struck me cold. they said "I shouldn't be forced to care". That is where we are in this country.
“Is anyone watching this?” Not enough….not enough.
He won a Pulitzer for his book on poverty. He’s a brilliant person. He makes sense & is a grounded individual, the opposite of what Americans are used to, so he’s ignored, unfortunately. I feel so bad for people like him, the stress & heaviness of knowing how to help but no one cares bc they’d rather have a false savior or be entertained.
I got chills when Jon slammed his hand on the table after Desmond said "a ticker for how many families went to a food pantry this month." These are two men who deeply care about making our society more equitable
We desperately need people like these two to represent the people
I’ve been unhoused in America for the last 1.5 years. I wish these authors would bring some of us up to talk about modern poverty from the voice of those impoverished
"Poverty, By America" should be required reading for everyone, but especially every elected official in our local, state and national governments! Matthew Desmond's keen research and insights are mind-blowing.
So Aunt May's whole "When you help someone, you help everyone" saying isn't just sentiment, it's correct!
What a wonderful, enlightening conversation. Why is it that our comedy programs deliver more sanity and truth than our media or our politicians?
