Description

Andrew Egger and Catherine Rampell break down Donald Trump’s bizarre McDonald’s DoorDash photo op at the White House, meant to highlight his “no tax on tips” policy. What starts as an economic messaging push quickly goes off the rails when Trump presses a DoorDash driver on her vote and veers into culture war territory. They also dig into what Democrats can learn from this kind of populist messaging and the risks of trying to copy it without losing the plot on good policy. That story is a story of a failed healthcare system.

Thank you, Catherine, for pointing out that Americans should not be bankrupted by medical bills or be forced to return to work in their golden years to cover those bills.

Thank you Catherine! As soon as I saw this I thought how awful it is that she’s medically bankrupt and has to hustle to make ends meet!

We have a secret ballot in this country for good reasons. Along with everything else, it isn't appropriate for a President to ask someone how they voted.

No one should go back to work at an old age because they've exhausted their life savings on paying for medical bills.

I also did not see this as a heartwarming story. I thought it was a really sad display of the status of our economy and healthcare.

They could not understand she didn’t want to lie. It’s something they can’t comprehend.

The best comment she had was about her husband just finishing a book. Trump asks what its about. She answered "Humility". Priceless!

This story brought me to tears. I can't imagine how the administration sees this story as a success. Having a Grandma delivery driver on display so that she can help pay for her husband's chemo treatment being celebrated as a yay, no tax on tips. In reality it would be great if healthcare was affordable. It would be great if she could spend more time with her husband and grandkids. This press display is a sad reminder that the administration wants trillions for war and ICE, and is anti-American.
