Description

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney seemed to challenge Donald Trump in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, declaring that “the old world order is not coming back” and urging fellow “middle powers” to come together. In response, Trump said Canada gets “a lot of freebies” from the United States and “they should be grateful”. After striking a major trade and tariff deal with China – the US’s rival superpower – is Carney emerging as the leader of a global resistance to Trump? And does he have an alternative vision for the world? Tristan Redman and Asma Khalid speak to Lyse Doucet, the BBC’s chief international correspondent. Many Canadians did not see it as a joke when Trump first said "51st state."

Politicians usually don't do things that make me happy. I am very happy and proud by our PM's speech.

How could you not understand what Carney was proposing? He proposes that middle power countries stand together and not be bullied, the inference being that they make their own trade deals with countries that are not the US.

To Lyse Douset : Canadians never thought his 51 state rhetoric was a "joke". His statement that he would annex Canada by economic force was very clear. 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦

Its not a transition, its a rupture. Nostalgia is not a strategy. If you're not at the table, you're on the menu. Take down the sign and join Canada as a third way. I can't remember the last time I was this proud to be Canadian. This speech is without a doubt the marker of a historic shift. Something we all could sense but couldn't articulate.

I’m an American and I have been following PM Mark Carney as he navigates our 🍊🤡 and Canadians you chose the best person to meet this moment. I am so embarrassed and ashamed of our highest ‘leaders’ and all that support their behaviors. Please know many of us are horrified. Canadian friendship has been one of our greatest blessings and and I am so sorry this has happened 😔❤️🇨🇦

One reason Mark Carney can speak out with such boldness is that he knows he has the backing of the majority of Canadians. We are an educated people with grandparents or great-grandparents who went through WW 11 and many immigrants who have lived under a dictatorship. We are ready to sacrifice for one another and for our country.
