Description

*Can a complete physical description of the brain explain conscious experience?* Michael Tooley reflects on the arguments that shaped his philosophy of mind, including Thomas Nagel's bat thought experiment, Frank Jackson's Mary argument, and David Chalmers' zombie argument. He explains why he remains persuaded that qualia are real despite the challenges they pose for a physicalist worldview. 0:00 Discovering Philosophy of Mind: Nagel, Jackson, and Qualia 4:44 Chalmers and the Zombie Argument 6:22 Do Qualia Require More Than Physicalism? 8:32 Causation, Consciousness, and the Limits of Physicalism *Michael Tooley* is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado Boulder. This debate around qualia really hits the mark—it's the 'great divide' for a reason. I loved how the Mary argument was brought up; it’s a classic, but still challenges materialism in such a clear way. I’ve been digging into the intersection of philosophy and science on my own channel lately, and seeing this breakdown is honestly validating. It’s a tough road to explore these deep topics without much support, but videos like this keep me motivated to keep digging deeper. Really thought-provoking.

The question is really why do qualia seem unreal according to Jerry Fodor

non materialistic views always lead to concepts that can’t be proven and you just have accepted them if you resonate with them but a materialistic approach would be to replicate qualia in a non biological machine or identity the mechanism that leads to qualia. this cannot be excluded as impossible. since in the process of the evolution it seems qualia may have appeared at some point then it seems likely it requires a certain configuration but it could be also fundamental. but it is hard to imagine an electron having qualia. what it does it bounces, travels as waves and can transform into photons (e- β+annihilation). what kind of qualia is that? the brain at least can create a virtual environment. qualia outside matter is even more weird: because you get virtually the same virtual environment as if using eyes with lens, focus, field of view, even time passing. really ?

*Michael Tooley argues that conscious experience cannot be easily reduced to physical descriptions and remains persuaded that qualia are real.* Can consciousness be fully explained by physical processes—or is something essential left out?

Can they not come up with a better term than “qualia.” That’s not a word associated with any common vernacular.

No one knows what qualia is like. They cannot explain their own qualia, much less anyone else's.

You're alive. Can you explain that? No, let's ignore that and replace it with consciousness and qualia.
