Man I don't think I've ever seen so much empathy for the mother character. She immediately disturbed me.
“ oh I'm sorry, nobody told me this was a psychological horror movie” 😂😂😂
The mother daughter relationship in this film is like the movie Carrie! Over protective moms sheltering their child because their lives got messed up.
I'm glad you guys gave Mila Kunis a shoutout, too, because she honestly has a REALLY tricky role in this: she has to constantly be shifting the tone of her performance so the audience can never quite be sure how to feel about her. One moment she seems sweet and caring (like a genuine trustworthy friend), the next moment she seems seductive and alluring (like she's attracted to Nina and trying to flirt), the next moment she seems devious and manipulative (like she's jealous of Nina and wants to sabotage her).
After the film came out a number of ballet critics came out and said the ballet world was nothing like this, entirely missing the point that its not ABOUT ballet per se, the whole movie is a metaphor for 'obsession leads to madness' - Aronofskys / Portmans genius movie....
She and Mila actually did train quite abit for this roll. Alot of the dancing was them. And Natalie's male partner in the performance became her husband in real life.
I love how the blurring of the lights at the very end tells you that she’s dying at that moment. Very tragic ending, but great movie!
"Losing herself to the role" is exactly right. Michael was locked in on this one
The dying swan piece. Literally dying. What an ending, took my breath away.
He told her that she already was the white swan but needed to become the black swan. So she did.
