"This video is old" cool so is PHP. Actually though, my journey filming this ended up with me getting close with the Laravel guys as well as a bunch of awesome changes being made to the ecosystem to help JS devs onboard more easily :)
Never in my life has a video title triggered my fight of flight harder.
As a core PHP dev, it pains me to hear Laravel and Taylor get talked about, when it really was Fabien Potencier and his Symfony project which made the renaissance in PHP framework possible. In fact, Laravel was just a wrapper on top of Symfony and to this day, uses many of it's components
WordPress still puts food on my table, and has been for over 10 years.
Hack did a lot more for PHP, they implemented several new features, which generated discussions and improvements to PHP itself. They also wrote the first and _only_ official PHP language specification.
After this I would make a video about: PSR standards (why js doesnt have this yet), Symfony fw and their standard defining packages that enabled Laravel, thephpleague, and packagist probably the nicest package manager... Because these are the reasons of PHP becoming "better" overtime.
11:23 You missed this sentence: “Poor design decisions, regrettable function names, global variables…” and I need to add "and randomly changing parameter order". I waited 3 minutes (from 8:35) for you to read the most important sentence of this article and you skipped it.
Im so old Macromedia Dreamweaver and MS FrontPage are the beginnings of my development journey. Back when the great debate was frames vs tables for html UI design. Pre CSS world.
Did you see the new PHP language proposal for THE PIPE OPERATOR???!!! (they literally said it's inspired by elixir in the proposal)
I've been coding in PHP for decades and use it daily.
