Imagine if instead of passing state or federal legislation, people just were active parents
Almost a decade ago, I found a private school that instead of providing text books, gave each student an iPAD, I saw that while applying for teacher positions, even then, I thought that can't be good, kids need to learn how to write, take notes, draw, etc. For years, I never heard of a teacher that discouraged studying by way of note cards.
My kids dont have access to the internet. Problem solved.
There's a reason most tech CEOs don't let their kids or extremely limit the use of social media.
The national push to blanket ban ticktock is a terrible idea, but local initiatives to set minimum age for kids is awesome. Social media causes a lot of problems for kids and treating it like tobacco/alcohol, guns, or pornography isn't a terrible idea.
Kids don't need smart phones period
Russell, it sounds like you read "The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains." I read that back in 2009, and I already saw what the author was talking about.
That gives parents more control over their child’s social media. If the kids are texting with strange adults, this is one form of security for the very young…I like it…
I think that Social Media apps need to be required to show a health warning every time you open the app. And there needs to be constant PSAs, billboards, and anti-social media messaging... like the anti-smoking PSAs and regulations of the 90s. The problem is parents giving this stuff to their kids, and they will never stop giving it to their kids until it's massively stigmatized. My friend is a high school teacher, and he even has talked to kids that HATE smart phones, and are aware of how it isolates them, but the kids feel trapped, because none of them want to be the only kid without a phone. There are many kids who would agree to getting rid of all phones in high school... but they can't bring themselves to be the only kid without one.
Were we not ripping our hair out a month ago about the notion of an Internet ID? But now it’s OK.
