Olivia Nuzzi Discusses Ethical Breaches, Fallout, and Survival in Writing *American Canto*
Discover Olivia Nuzzi’s rationale for turning personal catastrophe into literature, detailing the immense personal cost of ethical conflict in journalism and navigating intense public scrutiny.
Short Summary
- Accepted public shaming and job loss after violating journalistic ethics regarding RFK Jr.'s campaign.
- Wrote American Canto as an act of survival and establishing reality, not as a defensive spin exercise.
- Detailed RFK Jr.'s secret drug use while serving as Health and Human Services Secretary, despite his denials.
- Experienced intense fear, isolation, and mandated flight across the country following the scandal's fallout.
This interview with Tim Miller centers on Olivia Nuzzi’s new book, American Canto, which details her professional downfall stemming from her relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. during the 2024 campaign. Nuzzi unpacks the perceived ethical breaches, addresses accusations leveled by her ex-fiancé Ryan Lizza, and explains her use of writing as a necessary tool for survival and processing reality distortion in the Trump era. The segment balances frank admissions of mistakes with defenses of her narrative choices regarding high-profile figures.

Not answering the question with as many words as possible.
So when do we discuss the children dying from preventable illness?
I think she interprets a desire for a tell-all as salacious, while Tim is speaking to the concerns of a nation who is being impacted by this man in a position of power. It’s also disingenuous of someone who has written this book to say that people are asking too much of her.
People are shaming her because her behavior has been shameful. She talks a lot but says absolutely nothing.
This felt awkward, but I was honestly impressed with Tim's questioning, persistence, and ability to approach a bizarre situation with sensitivity, but also integrity 🤷♀️
Tim’s facial expressions matched how I felt during most of this — wtf are you saying. And what’s really going on here?
Is it me or has she said nothing while continuously talking
"you can ask whatever" after 50 minutes of blocking nearly every question Tim asked up until this point
Self-promotion meets self-delusion.
Tim Miller has the patience of a saint.
