A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy was found guilty today of using excessive force during a violent encounter outside a Lancaster supermarket in June 2023. Trevor James Kirk, 32, of Santa Clarita, was convicted of one felony count of deprivation of rights under color of law. According to evidence presented during the three-day trial, Kirk and another deputy responded to a possible robbery at a WinCo Foods store. They detained a man matching the suspect’s description, while a woman—identified in court documents as "J.H."—recorded the interaction on her cellphone. J.H. reminded Kirk that he was legally required to inform the man of the reason for his detention and noted she was broadcasting the scene live on social media. Without issuing any commands, Kirk attempted to grab J.H.'s phone. When she turned away, he seized her by the arm, hooked his hand behind her neck, and violently slammed her face-first into the ground. As J.H. lay on the pavement, Kirk shouted at her to "get on the ground," even as she told him, "It’s already on YouTube Live," confirming that the footage had already been shared publicly.
