Dead Internet Theory Confirmed: AI Brain Rot Threatens Civilization

Sam Altman warned that AI consuming its own output risks creating a "toilet swirl of insanity," potentially collapsing verifiable human online interaction within years.

Short Summary

  • AI models are rapidly training on synthetic data, leading to degraded information quality and widespread deception if unchecked.
  • The concentration of AI power by technologists who question humanity's survival raises existential concerns about future technological goals.
  • As deepfakes and synthetic realities flood the web, verifiable human timestamps may become the ultimate commodity for truth. This discussion explores the immediate dangers of recursive AI hallucination, the philosophical threat posed by tech oligarchs, and potential societal retreats from digital life.

I am a history professor, one of my biggest concerns is AI. I teach both in person and online, I put all my lectures on my channel as a free resource for folks. We are at the point where soon an AI will be able to take a class for a student, and a professor will be able to use AI to grade. We are going to graduate people who are idiots. I don't let my students use AI, but it is getting harder and harder to tell what is real and what is not. For the record I am a real person, with real lectures. Just me, nothing fancy, but some thought provoking historical lectures!

Couldn't teachers prevent the use of AI, by bringing back written essays, in cursive?

The Internet started to die as soon as the corporations got its claws into it I mean YT is nothing like it was 20 years ago and that's no accident

There was already brainrot on the internet, it was just by real people. It’s just multiplied thanks to rise of bots & AI roughly around 2020 taking in the brainrot. The big issue is just distinguishing what’s real & what’s not.

TikTok should have been banned the moment kids ate tide pods to be trendy.

YouTube should have a "button" to choose if you want AI, mixed, or only human-created content.
