Historians Compare Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Party to The Great Gatsby

Discover why historians view a key Mar-a-Lago event as a historical turning point echoing literary warnings about American decadence and political collapse.

Short Summary

  • Historians pinpoint Trump's Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago as a politically significant moment marking peak hubris.
  • The celebration occurred just prior to midterm elections demonstrating a major repudiation of Trump's political standing.
  • The discussion draws explicit parallels between key figures in Trump’s circle and characters from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel.
  • Experts argue that Trump's aesthetic choices demonstrate "style follows dysfunction," contrasting sharply with classical American understatement.

This segment analyzes a specific Donald Trump celebration through the lens of literary history, primarily comparing it to The Great Gatsby. Sean Wilentz and Sydney Blumenthal argue that the party signified Trump’s obliviousness just before subsequent political setbacks, providing a framework for understanding current political style and historical resonance.

Thanks very much for addressing this. I was SHOCKED that it wasn’t a huge scandal at the time. The obscenity was so glaring and blatant, I expected an immediate explosive rejection of this hideous display of decadence. I was crushed when no one said a word.
