Predatory animals are also fantastic at gauging the moment of prey, whether its an eagle swooping down and grabbing a fish or fieldmouse, or a cheeta running after a gazelle.
Some dogs can catch frisbees and I've seen a lot of dogs catch balls on the run. So certainly, that's at least one more species with this skill.
To me that strange, almost subroutine kind of thing our subconscious does is just wild, when something near you suddenly falls and your hand darts out and Perfectly catches it, even corner of your eye stuff, like I did not logically command my hand to somehow grab that smart phone that the cat just knocked off my desk, but somehow perfect execution mid-air save. I always have a stunned moment of "which part of my brain just did that?" =)
Niel please continue to share your interesting ideas. Would you consider creating a philosophy playlist? Just understandings you enjoy and would like others to enjoy?
Catching is impressive, but hitting with controlled spin is also amazing. Watching a snooker or pool player spin a cue ball, or a tennis player use top spin or a football (soccer) player hook a ball into the corner of the net. Calculation and control. Pretty amazing
One of my crowning athletic episodes, was catching a ball hit toward me, but was falling to my left, about ten or twelve feet. . . Watching it start to descend, I determined where the ball would fall, I timed my leap to when my glove would be there to meet said ball, landing, basically onto my forearms , snagging it, to great applause & cheers !
Its safe to say Neil is the rock/movie star of the science world.he got recognized every where he went.
Yes. People usually talk about situational awareness as a static phenomenon. I tend to think of it as 4-D consciousness
I love Star Talk
My dog has been able to do this since the age of one. My kid took ten years to learn this.
