MACV-SOG Loadout Secrets: Weapon Evolution and Field Gear in Vietnam

Learn precisely what MACV-SOG legend Dale Hanson carried during deep reconnaissance missions, including the improvised gear solutions born from combat necessity. Discover the critical flaw in early M16 magazines that cost lives and drove innovation.

Short Summary

  • Initial covert missions required using non-standard weapons like the Swedish K until M16/CAR-15 adoption was authorized.
  • Magazine capacity proved immediately insufficient; the standard 20-round magazine was a critical liability against AK-47 users.
  • Dale Hanson detailed his unique web gear/canteen cover system for carrying eight grenades and 26 rifle magazines alongside survival essentials.
  • Team integrity and suppressing enemy fire were identified as the highest tactical priorities on small recon teams. He details the difficult transition from 20-round to 30-round magazines, a change funded privately by operators after bureaucratic delays stalled official adoption. This discussion reveals the granular details of loadout management, survival strategy, and the immediate tactical realities faced by reconnaissance teams operating deep behind enemy lines.

Description

MACV-SOG legend Dale Hanson breaks down exactly what he carried on missions during three harrowing tours in Vietnam — from Swedish K subguns to CAR-15s, improvised magazine rigs, grenades, claymores, survival tools, and the gear that kept SOG recon teams alive behind enemy lines. He explains how early limitations like 20-round magazines nearly cost him his life, leading to the push that ultimately helped bring the 30-round magazine into existence. Dale also details how he packed his web gear, rigged extraction ropes, managed survival equipment, and sustained week-long missions deep in enemy territory. Dude went from MAC V to being a Pastor. First he sends them to God, then he tells us about Him.

I remember., those MAC V guys were tough. Younger people don't have any idea what these guys went through. It's good Shawn is getting these men on his show.

My recently deceased grandfather was MAC V and we never knew it until after he passed. He went to Korea and Vietnam, retired from the service, had 15 children and worked for, then retired from the oil and gas industry after 20 years. He was cut from a different cloth, that much I can assure you.

Thank you! Amazing to hear about this. The Vietnam vets are getting older and it’s important to hear their stories while they are still with us.

When he said nunchucks i busted out laughing. The thought of an operator using nunchucks in battle has me about to piss myself.

Both my grandfathers fought in WWII, one in the Pacific theater, and the other fought in The Battle of the Bulge, my dad was a Captain during the Vietnam war. Love, and respect 🫡 to all those who served, or currently serve! 🇺🇸 I was a little ish as a kid. I was a lil skate punk in the 80’s, and couldn’t stand authoritarians, and still can’t. It’s crazy. Back then I never would have imagined how much of a patriot I am now.
