Khamenei is a spiritual leader of Shi'ite muslims. That obviously includes hardline Shi'ites but also a hell of a lot of moderate Shi'ites as well as even some secular ones who while not practicing are still spritually connected. Think the Pope of Shias. No matter how much of a non-practicing Catholic you may be, just think how you would react to the deliberate assasination of the Pope by a State. While I can't guess the percentage of politically motivated Agnostic/Atheist/Moderate Iranians, I doubt their numbers are large enough, or that they have the fervour to survive openly in Iran no matter how many Ayatollahs are taken out. In fact the more that are killed, the worse for them it will be. Like I said, think taking out a Pope, then another, and another. The reaction would be unimaginable. This isn't just a Saddam we are talking about here. Taking Khamenei out would achieve nothing and enrage a hell of alot of Iranians. And just like the Pope they'll elect another one to replace him. I think there are 100+ spiritual leaders many of whom aren't even located in Iran. Remember, Khomenei wasn't even in Iran for The Shah to be overthrown. The Shahs Son is a total non starter. The fact that the West is presenting him as a viable option just shows how astoundingly deluded they are when it comes to Iran. He is already being seen as a traitor before he has even set foot in Iran as he rubs his hands while Iranians are being killed. Many Westerners don't even realise why his father was organically overthrown in the first place. The Shah was a complete CIA plant and backed by a CIA trained secret service SAVAK who brutally abducted and tortured Iranians for speaking a bad word about the Shah. This isn't conspiracy theory or an accusation. It is fact. Google SAVAK and click as many relevant links as you like. The lack of understanding of basic Iranian Geopolitics by Western leaders is shockingly astounding. I know, it shouldn't be.
