The "I learned it from watching you" gag was a reference to an old anti-marijuana commercial from the 80s or early 90s
19:39 "Listen to him. He is high and wise." I gotta get that on a t-shirt.
There was a hint that Marty wasn’t really dead. The reason the facility shakes when Marty “dies” is because the gods knew he wasn’t dead; which is predicated on the horror/action trope that if a death did not occur on screen, they probably aren’t really dead. Since we only saw him drug into the hole and blood fly up, the gods were letting them know that Marty didn’t die and they didn’t catch it. I love that little tidbit. This movie is filled with those. I’ve watched it every October since it came out and pick something new up every time I watch it. The overall metaphor of the movie where the gods are us and the facility is the production crew that is trying to please “us” based on what tropes are successful which we all presumably want to keep recreating. There is a lot of detail in the metaphor throughout the movie that you’ll see more and more of if you rewatch it.
During the lake scene, the only student not to jump into the lake is Marty, who remains fully clothed on the dock. This was partially due to Fran Kranz noticeably being in as good, if not better, shape than the other male students. In the commentary for the film, the writers joke that he was "ripped like muscular Jesus" and assert that if Marty were shown being that fit it would ruin the character. This is partly also why Marty wears baggier clothes than the other students.
@46:08 "Do we believe her" is so funny to me 🤣 They found out zombies, monsters, ghosts, and all sorts of evil characters are real but old gods destroying humanity is such a far stretch😂
Fun fact: Marty is ripped irl but because of the type of character he's playing the producers had him keep his shirt on throughout the movie. They didn't want to ruin the character he's playing.
You are correct about Cassandra. In mythology she is cursed to see the future but also cursed to never be believed while disaster unfolds around her
Achara: I want them to see all different levels of monsters andstuff Steph: I want the monsters to attack the company Me: funny you say that
When they pull the lever that signifies "the fool" is dead, an earthquake happens. One of the guys in the control room says they are getting excited. It's the reverse, they are mad because they know "the fool" is still alive. The "old ones" are a metaphor for us, the movie-goes, who are requiring the deaths of these characters for our entertainment.
So basically, given the train switch dilemma, Achara would rather let 8 billion die than pull the switch and kill 1 person.
