“I DIDNT LEARN THIS IN SCHOOL” - guy who slept through history class
A medical doctor can be an epidemiologist but being an epidemiologist does not require a MD.
1. Correcting some stuff: Med school is 4 years, the last two of which are clinical rotations. A sub-i is a rotation in your fourth year of medical school (still a medical student) where you're being tested a bit more than the other med students, usually in anticipation of applying for a residency at that hospital. You have no authority during a sub-i. Both med school and residency are important as a place of study, but generally speaking, most physicians who can pass the boards know about the same stuff. The "where did you go to school" stuff matters a lot less than where you placed in your class, and despite this being backed by data, people who struggled to pass will fall back on where they went to school. And laypeople fall for it. Clinical skills don't necessarily translate onto paper, and as a doctor, patient adherence to your plan depends just as much on whether they trust & like you as whether you're smart/accomplished. For residency, you have a lot of choice where you go... and you don't actually get paid under minimum wage. It is extremely hard, but work is capped at 80 hr./week and pays a minimum of $65,000 (2026 money) including vacations. That's about $17 an hour. It still does feel like a racket, but speaking from experience, the administration of the education is very costly to the hospitals. Working in residency requires a temporary and restricted medical license that basically says you can do some things but cannot practice independently. That's one reason residents don't get paid as much -- their supervisor also needs to be paid, the whole education requires extensive regulation/compliance, and there isn't additional billing that occurs if a patient sees one attending and a resident. 2. As a physician, I'm highly suspicious of anyone who claims to have transferred between medical schools (UofM is a top-3 med school), especially if they claim to have transferred into Columbia (another very prestigious school). I'm even more suspicious since he didn't do a residency. Going to a highly desirable school, transferring med schools, and then not getting a residency is a classic tale of someone who had at least one major scandal in med school (or is lying) and therefore couldn't get a residency. I'm also highly skeptical of anyone who says nurses do all the work. When i was an intern, nurses were complaining about working 3 12-hour shifts consecutively. When I first heard that, I was working 6 12-hour shifts every week for months straight, with some 28's mixed ins. Anyway, now this guy is calling himself a physician, which he absolutely is not since having a doctorate doesn't make you a physician. He's playing on words intentionally, in the way that an NP calls herself doctor despite not actually being "a doctor" And by that logic, someone with a Ph.D. in Western Lit could say either "I'm Dr. Bob" or "Hi all, I'm Bob and I'm a doctor." It's clear this guy is relying on that misnomer to boost his perceived importance, but he's never actually done the work to become "a doctor". Like these are the things people say when they're 3 months out of med school and a patient questions whether a resident is "a doctor". He could never practice independently or get a medical license, even in the future, because to do that requires him being in good standing in a residency program for at least 12-18 months (bc that's when you can sit for your last round of licensing exams). But regardless, him even calling what he's done a "career" makes it clear to me that he's intentionally misleading the public. He's far exceeding the scandal of Trump's unlicensed choice for attorney general. 3. Most importantly, the picture of him calling himself a doctor is in a short white coat. Short white coats are worn by students, not doctors. 4. Hasan literally couldn't lift 315 off the rack, much less hit it once
