Air Combat Revolution: America’s First War of the Jet Age (S2, E12) | Dogfights | Full Episode
Operation Desert Storm: America's Technological Leap in Air Combat
Discover how electronic warfare dominance, strategic thinking like the OODA loop, and vastly improved weaponry secured overwhelming aerial victories during the first major air offensive since Vietnam.
Short Summary
- Achieve unprecedented air superiority by jamming enemy sensors, blinding their defenses early in the conflict.
- Execute complex, coordinated strikes where specialized aircraft (EW, AWACS, Bombers) work together rather than relying solely on fighter duels.
- Witness high-stakes dogfights that tested aircraft limits (12 G turns) and forced innovative defensive tactics against superior maneuverability.
- Understand how lessons from Vietnam directly shaped the successful BVR (Beyond Visual Range) combat doctrine implemented in 1991.
Air warfare in Desert Storm evolved immediately, moving beyond close-in "dogfighting" toward coordinated, long-range engagements enabled by advanced avionics. This document details critical engagements showcasing the power of electronic jamming, pilot training upgrades, and Colonel Boyd’s strategic framework applied against hardened Iraqi forces.

We deserved another season of this series. It ended way too soon.
Can we give some love to the narrator? He was SPECTACULARLY good in this series.
Pulling 12gs and saying it didn’t even faze him, bro is a demigod
Amazing. And remember friends, no F-15 has ever been shot down. Yes, a couple were hit by enemy fire but even with most of a wing blown off it stayed in the air and safely landed. I was amazed to learn this.
They really need to start these kinds of shows back up. With 3d animation nowadays they could make some awesome stuff
My father was on the design team that developed the terrain avoidance radar for the F 111. This was before he was assigned to NASA and worked on the Gemini and Apollo projects.
F-15 is one of my favorites
Those had to be some high adrenaline situations.
Thank all of you guys for your service. True Warriors
For such experienced pilots, the Iraqi pilots sure seem to hit the ground a lot.
