I have to disagree with Alex‘ s analysis of Iran and the strait. If Iran gives up control of the strait eventually they will be destroyed like Syria. The strait is the only way to guarantee their security. When he says “ironclad security guarantees” what is he talking about? If that was possible why doesn’t Russia simply just accept Ironclad security guarantees (MinskIII?). Because the US is agreement incapable and will only consider facts on the ground. If his take on Chinas position is true (and I think it’s far more nuanced and sophisticated than Alex represents) they would be asking Iran to sign its own death warrant so that they can get back to doing business… or at least until it’s Chinas turn on the pike. I have to believe that China and Russia know this.
