Google's Project Suncatcher: Deploying AI Data Centers in Space

Discover the revolutionary plan to power massive AI computation using solar-collecting satellites connected by "space lasers." Understand the critical cost thresholds required to make cosmic AI infrastructure economically viable by the mid-2030s.

Short Summary

  • Outcome: Google is developing Project Suncatcher: constellations of solar-powered satellites hosting TPUs in space for scalable ML compute.
  • Why it matters: This approach targets near-constant energy access (in sun-synchronous orbit), potentially solving massive terrestrial data center power demands.
  • Economic Hurdle: Feasibility hinges globally on reducing launch costs to below $200 per kilogram to LEO.
  • Timeline: Google plans to launch prototype satellites by early 2027, anticipating economic viability around 2035, contingent on maintaining current launch industry learning rates.

This briefing details the technical architecture of Google's proposed space-based AI infrastructure, covering power generation, data transfer via fast optical links, and radiation hardening. It analyzes the dependency on launch vehicle cost reduction trajectories to meet the $200/kg energy parity point.

is heat a problem. Space might be cold but it’s slow to dump heat by infrared radiator, especially with these things being in direct sunlight. I guess they can shelter behind the solar panels but the processors are still generating a lot of heat
