I always loved how the emperor refuses to bow under threat, but then bows to Mulan after. Highest show of respect.

One thing that doesn't get mentioned enough is Shan Yu never underestimates Mulan. He calls her "the soldier from the mountain" rather than "that woman" and seriously tries to take her out.

My favorite moment is when “a girl worth fighting for” stops so abruptly at the little girl’s village. The reality of war is that glory is a lie. War is about fighting for someone who needs protection, someone who can’t fight for themselves. Sometimes the girl worth fighting for is a little girl, and sometimes it’s a father with injuries. Honor isn’t gendered. People who are capable should act to protect those who are vulnerable.

you can say about Shan Yu what you want, but he was the only man who respected Mulan as a woman, because as a Hun he only saw her for what she was: a damn good soldier

Something I just realized is "A girl worth fighting for" leads to the burned village showing us the actual girl worth fighting for. The little girl who lost her doll.

The matchmaker calls Mulan too skinny not because the movie itself was made in the 90s but because the story takes place in an ancient time where matchmakers would look for girls with large hips that made them suitable for healthy pregnancies. Even if the movie was made today, if the story was still contextualized in that period it would still make sense to have that line that way.

34:42 if Mushu didn’t make the fake letter they wouldn’t have known this threat was closer than they thought. Mushu helped put them in the battle to save China
