The Worst Advice Every Parent Gives Their Kid | Jim Breuer Reacts

At 56, and throughout my entire Life, I learned to hide anything I enjoyed from my parents, as it would be used in the future to mock me, or taken away as punishment.

30 years ago my Dad bought me my first guitar and he said “you’ll never stick with it” 30 years later here I am a self taught guitar player and singer/songwriter. I’m so glad he got it for me. We were poor so I knew what this man put into making it happen. I do the same and sacrifice for my boys. 💯

This is so freaking true. Don't take advice from miserable people. Take advice from people accomplishing the things that you want to accomplish.

Every time I found something I was passionate about my dad would say it was a waste of time and I should do what he wants me to do. He never supported my dreams or passions and it drove me into a deep depression….

I’ve had a similar thought based on what I heard growing up. The worst advice I heard was “find something you’re passionate about”… The amount of stress that put on me back when I was only about 13-14 years old was immense. I didn’t even understand the world back then. I didn’t even know what work would be like since I hadn’t had a real job yet. And I was made to believe that I had to choose a career that I “enjoy”, before I even got out of high school. Now that I’m older, I realize the correct advice would’ve been “find something that allows you to live a life that you love.” I don’t need to love my job. I need to love my life. My job just needs to be tolerable and get all the bills paid. My CAREER is not my LIFE. I’m disgusted by that idea now, that I was told I needed to love my job. No one ever told me to love my life.

There's a delicate balance between encouraging a child to practice their passion vs encouraging them to have a skillset that allows them to be gainfully employed and have some stability with their finances. The two rarely overlap. Just because someone is passionate about something, or even good at it, doesn't mean it's a pathway to making money and supporting oneself (let alone a family). Is it possible to make a living being an artist? Sure, but for very few. Are you the one in however many million people who's going to be able to make art as their career? Unlikely. Hence why most parents push their kids toward more fruitful careers because it's more realistic and ultimately matters more. If the kid follows their passion but ends up hungry and homeless because they can't make any money, they're going to be far more miserable than they would be as a 9-5 worker in a regular job while practicing their passion as a hobby. Life isn't rainbows and sunshine. And I say all of this as a lifelong musician who would have loved to be a professional drummer, but ultimately it's not a realistic gameplan.

I loved to draw as kid. The feedback was almost always, "you're great, you should be a commercial artist." That discouraged me.

Honestly, letting kids follow their passions is so important ❤️ My daughter loves art, and I used to be anxious whenever she went to her art classes alone. Findmykids has definitely eased my worries a bit while she’s off painting her heart out!

Everything is currency. Including your time and your peace of mind.
