Description

Sarah Matthews was inside Trump’s White House on January 6. Matthews, the former deputy press secretary explains to Sarah Longwell what it was like watching the Capitol attack from the West Wing, why Trump refused to meet the moment, and how that day finally pushed her to resign. Five years later, she reflects on Republican accountability, January 6 fading from public memory, and why Trump’s return to power still shocks her. Sarah Longwell, I love what you're doing here and I respect the journey you've made to get to this place, so know this next comment comes from a place of love and respect: Supporting the Constitution is NOT a conservative value. Anyone who cares about America supports the Constitution. Democrats support the Constitution. Conservatives cannot claim that supporting the Constitution is unique to them, because then by implication they're saying that non-conservatives don't support the Constitution. If they don't support the Constitution, then we don't share an important moral framework, and the non-conservatives become people we must defeat at any cost. I honestly believe that this kind of thinking is part reason we are where we are today. We all love our country, and the Constitution, and we are all fighting to get it back.

I don't think people fully appreciate how long three hours is to not act. He knew those people would listen to him. He obviously wanted it to happen.

I have lived through many catastrophic things…both Kennedys, MLK, the Challenger things that imprint on the mind and January 6th was one of them.

I’ve always wondered what drives Women and Minorities to vote for Republicans when that party does not have any interest in protecting them.

I would imagine it would be difficult to have your public identity wrapped around your turn away from Trump, but Sarah presents herself so gracefully and honestly. I really appreciate it that she is out there every day fighting for what is right in spite of the fact that it involves reopening those old wounds over and over again.
