👍🏼 This works at ANY age. Help your grown child that is failing academically. 🙏🏼 0:26 4 steps: 0:33 1. Increase reading ability 1:33 2. Increase background knowledge 3:14 3. Increase vocabulary 3:34 4. Be exposed to COMPLEX text 4:53 ☝🏼 Build your child's confidence by NOT forcing on them books that are much more complex than where they are intellectually BUT don't underestimate their ability to grasp more complex information. It's a subtle balance and it's hard for some educators but keep YOURSELF in check too
I’m a future educator, currently in college studying for TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and I adore your tips! I’m currently taking a “Literacy Development” class, and basically you gave all of the points that we’re discussing in such an easy-to-digest manner. Keep up the good work!
This is great I homeschool and a lot of this is natural. I never censor my use of terminology. I just let my children ask what a word means and notice their use of the word later on. And the curriculum we use (The Good and the Beautiful) has many complimentary books that continue to build their reading and vocabulary as they progress through the curriculum.
Our son is in 4th grade and really struggling in this area. My husband found your video and really was an eye opener. Great information, thank you!
If I may add, also introduce your little one to either Google online dictionary or buy a dictionary and read explanations and use the words in a different sentence for context
Any recommendations on books?
Love this so much!! Exactly spot on about exposing kids to a diverse range of topics and rich vocabulary! I always do read aloud a level or two above when they can read on their own so their vocabulary grows ❤. As an adult my reading comprehension is garbage. It takes me so much effort to read properly (my eyes dart around, never had it assessed), that my the time I get to the end of a sentence I forget what was at the beginning.
That's correct, fluency drills and strategies increase their ability to read more effectively which allows you to build comprehension over time
I love your videos. I need help for my seventh grader. She has issues comprehending what she’s reading. Will these tips work for her a seventh grader?
This is a great video that explains and expresses awareness and accountability. Thank you I am grateful to learn. God bless you.
