Why Trump’s H1-B Visa Plan Could Backfire on the US
H1-B Visa Fee Threatens US Talent Advantage Amid Global Competition
This proposed $100,000 H1-B fee signals further US bureaucratic confusion, driving global talent toward rapidly improving competitor nations. Learn why this move may backfire on the American economy by accelerating job offshoring.
Short Summary
- The $100,000 fee per new H1-B petition immediately alienates top global talent needing US visas.
- Confused and complex US regulations currently push skilled workers toward streamlined, favorable jurisdictions (e.g., UAE, Singapore).
- Capital and skilled jobs follow favorable treatment; the US risks losing its competitive edge to nations actively recruiting experts. This discussion analyzes the fallout from the proposed massive H1-B fee structure. Henderson argues this policy misunderstands the current global dynamic where other countries aggressively court high-skilled workers who no longer need to move to the US. US citizens must understand the negative economic impact resulting from this bureaucratic misstep.

US citizen tech graduates have one of the highest unemployment rates because Google keeps bringing in foreigners that don’t have 150k in student debt. They aren’t better, just cheaper.
I'm from a rich western country. I had an H1b. You know what happened when my H1b expired? I kept working for the employer overseas. Except instead I wasn't paying US tax or supporting US local businesses.
Americans are told from childhood that the US is the best country in the world. And as a whole lot of poor desperate people want to move there illegally they see that as proof that everyone wants to move there. It just ain't so anymore. Their corrupt bankrupt leader and all of the political chaos is just another reason not to go there.
For 100k usd salary in India you can afford a nice 3 bed room condo with a couple of house help and a good nice car/suv if not a merc or a BM. Best healthcare and a chauffer to drive u around what else u want.

The U.S. lives 90 days at a time. It’s hard to carry out a longterm project that way.
You are so right about failing at the margins. People don’t realize that it’s not a big move. It’s a small little moves, at the margin, that you don’t notice and then bring you to large losses. And the worst thing about this is that both foreign and US workers lost will be the most educated in the most intelligent. Because those are the ones that can leave.
A country is more than just its economy.
that visa cost is wild 😮
