The 4-part docu-series “Sacrificing Liberty” does the best job of explaining what actually happened to the USS Liberty. To be clear, as a U.S. intelligence ship, in June, 1967, the USS Liberty was sent by the U.S. to international waters in the eastern Mediterranean to monitor Israel’s 6-day war. It was *NOT* a case of mistaken identity. Like 9/11, the sky was cloudless and blue and the weather perfect. Some off-duty Liberty sailors were sunbathing on the deck when the attack began. The crew even managed to raise their holiday colors during the attack, a gigantic American flag so there was no question as to who they were. Israel intended to sink the ship and then blame it on Egypt as a pretext to bring in the U.S. and widen the war. The USS Liberty is the most highly-decorated ship in American history for a single action. We remember the Alamo, Pearl Harbor, and 9/11, but very few know the story of the USS Liberty. It should be taught to schoolchildren. 🧨
