Medical physicist here: this is ultrasound tomography. It's awesome tech, actually, but the most obvious application is breast ultrasound tomography. The woman lies on her stomach with one of her breasts dipped into a bowl of water. The scan produces three images, one each for sound speed, attenuation, and reflectivity, and different tumor types show up best in different image types. That's one of the huge advantages. The resolution is about the same as MRI. Compared to mammography, you get 3D scans and, perhaps most importantly, it works well with dense breasts (whereas mammography, which typically produces 2D projection images, struggles here). So serious people are working on it and have been for awhile. The real breakthrough was computing power allowing for more traditional 3D iterative algorithms to generate images. AI didn't really have anything to do with it. AI is being integrated into all kinds of proposed image-generation algorithms, and that's my field actually, but that approach has serious challenges and limitations and AI is not essential in the slightest for ultrasound tomography.
