This is Your Brain on Bullsh*t - David Pinsof
Decoding Human Motivation: Incentives, Opinions, and the Status Game
Stop chasing elusive happiness; understand that your opinions are actually campaigns fought over social standing, driven by underlying incentive structures. Learn how to accurately diagnose real motivations versus manufactured discourse.
Short Summary
- Behavior is inherently driven by evolutionary incentives (food, status, belonging), not the internal pursuit of happiness.
- True opinions combine a preference with social judgments, creating status hierarchies concerning that preference.
- Most public arguments are "pseudo-arguments," designed primarily for intimidation and status competition, not truth-seeking.
- Recognize "deepities"—statements that offer low-stakes obviousness alongside high-stakes implausibility—as status signaling tools.
This discussion with research scientist David Pinsof dismantles the common misconception that humans seek internal well-being. Instead, Pinsof argues that understanding proximate and ultimate incentives provides a far more accurate lens for viewing behavior, group dynamics, and why we argue the way we do. Mastering these concepts allows you to detect manipulation and clarify genuine discourse.

You can create happiness with gratitude. Thats a compleatly internal mechanism. Every time i look at my wife with gratitude, I get an extreme wave of happiness. When im not intentionally appreciating the things she dose or the her presence it's easy to take her forgranted and resentment can build.
true happiness comes in tiny doses. the trick is feeling contentment.
In the words of the Dude, "Yeah well, that's just like, your opinion man."
If happiness is a recalibration of expectations, then that would explain the hedonic treadmill

Man won the status game by pointing out the status game... But that means I lost by pointing out that he's pointing it out.

The fewer preferences you have, the easier life is, I suppose. I believe I heard that said by The Great Jorden Peterson....? I've adopted this concept, and it has definitely enhanced my flow state of being! Great episode!
Incentives are all that are getting me through life right now because unhappiness is my current state and it's going on a decade of this. I'm glad I have kids...they are one of those incentives.
This part about opinions is brilliant. So much things start making sense with this approach to the topic
