NFL Week 13 REACTION: Steelers struggle, Bears & Broncos on fire, Cowboys | Colin Cowherd: THE HERD
NFL Week 13 Coaching Audits: Tomlin Outdated, Bears Transformed.
Assess which NFL head coaches are leading with modern offensive schemes and which veteran defensive minds are failing to adapt in the current league climate. Learn why team identity hinges on offseason hires like Ben Johnson.
Short Summary
- Older defensive-minded head coaches (Tomlin, Carroll, Belichick) appear outdated compared to younger offensive strategists (Johnson, Shanahan).
- The Chicago Bears established a clear, tough identity quickly under Offensive Coach Ben Johnson, drastically improving situational football metrics.
- The Dallas Cowboys became a functionally better team following the trade of defensive superstar Micah Parsons, prioritizing roster flexibility.
- Philadelphia shows signs of an offensive identity crisis that Nick Sirianni, lacking elite schematic skills, struggles to fix mid-season.
The episode breaks down high-profile Week 13 performances to establish a clear hierarchy of coaching efficacy in the modern NFL structure. Focusing on in-season adjustments highlights why offensive-minded leaders excel at fixing immediate problems better than defensive counterparts.

The way Colin says “YOUUtOOb” plays on repeat in my brain.
JMac looks like the guy who trains for pickleball
Anyone but me gonna give J-Mac his flowers for predicting KC misses the playoffs??
Isn't Mike Vrabel a defensive coach ?
When Steelers were 4-2 and the afc north was injured he was all in on Steelers. Now it’s “I always said he should go to Min”
He’s right about offensive coaches being better at adjustments than defensive ones. Todd Bowles is another perfect example
Did you notice in the beginning of the season Caleb would say Ben but after a couple of games into the season he only refers to him as coach now? Very subtle but that's coaching your QB into a leader and respecting them.
You are forgetting we have a former HC as our DC too. Not to mention DA is a great DC. It takes everyone to make that ship sail.
ben johnson taking his shirt off in the locker room was bold, spicy and exciting just like the buffalo ranch mccrispy now available at mcdonalds
A well known hot dog spot in Chicago offered the city free hot dogs if they won and Ben Johnson took his shirt off. Our coach is a man of the people and hooked us up.
