Description

It is very surprising that this interview ran on primetime national television in 1971 when this was recorded. The speaker is Joe Michael Cobb who was a brilliantly articulate spokesperson for the Libertarian movement. I found this interview fascinating when I first saw it on TV and still find it fascinating today. His staunch and articulate support for making cannabis/marijuana legal made sense to me. Joe Cobb is a prominent figure in the American libertarian movement, known for his extensive contributions as an economist, editor, and political candidate. In the mid-1960s, Cobb served as the editor-in-chief of the New Individualist Review, a pioneering libertarian magazine that featured contributions from notable thinkers such as F.A. Hayek and Ludwig von Mises. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Cobb held several significant positions: He was Deputy Director of the White House Office of Policy Information in 1982. Staff Director of the Congressional Joint Economic Committee from 1990 to 1991. Chief Economist for the U.S. Senate Republican Policy Committee between 1992 and 1993. John M. Olin Senior Fellow in Economics at The Heritage Foundation from 1993 to 1996. Cobb actively participated in electoral politics as a Libertarian candidate and ran for California's 48th Congressional District in 2000 and 2002. He also contested Arizona's 7th Congressional District in 2012, 2014, and 2016. He was a staunch advocate for monetary reform and was instrumental in the passage of the American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin Act in 1985, which authorized the U.S. Mint to produce gold bullion coins. Cobb has lived privately and has not held any major institutional appointments or active roles in contemporary think tanks. His legacy remains tied to his foundational work in the 1960s as the editor-in-chief of the New Individualist Review (which published works by F.A. Hayek and Ludwig von Mises), his 1980s White House policy work, and his crucial legislative role in crafting the American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. 1971 was the year I graduated from high school. I went to jail twice for cannabis. Now it’s legal in my state and millions in profit and taxes are made.

If the government could regulate itself first, that would be great.

You know, it just hit me the sheer physical amount of film you've had to keep well for so long, compiled and maintained, and all to be able to share it as broadly as possible. I don't know how often it's expressed, but I truly feel there are thousands of people who are deeply grateful to you and your archive.

Smoking right now, so glad it’s legalized where I’m at.
